We encourage parents to be involved in their son/daughter’s education at MH-MA, and an even bigger part of sharing the experience.
Parent-School Communication
Good communication between parents and the school is essential in the education of a student. Some methods that MH-MA uses to keep in touch with parents include the following:
- Progress, quarterly, and semester report mailings
- Weekly email of agenda to parents
- K-12 Planet (online grade book)
- Academic and discipline reporting when necessary
- Parent Club meetings
- Raven Alerts (text messaging of school announcements or emergency information)
- Periodic letters, phone calls, and emails
Faculty and staff contact information is found on the schoo'ls website under the Contact Us pages. Parents are encouraged to visit with teachers about their son/daughter's progress. Contacting a teacher through email is the easiest form of communication, as they are teaching during the course of the school day and generally unavailable for phone calls. Designating a specific time for a phone conversation or school visit through email is a great approach if unable to answer or address questions through an email.
Parents need to notify the school of any address, phone numbers, or changes to email address. Please email Patty at pgardner@mh-ma.com, with any updates.
Parents Club
The Parent Club is organized and presided over by parents of current students at MH-MA. Parents are strongly encouraged to join, as it is a great way to get involved with the school and your child’s experience. The Parent Club holds monthly meetings and has been vital in the support of the school’s dances, concession stands at sporting events, and a variety of fundraisers throughout the year. From the fundraiser the Parent Club has received and granted “wish lists” submitted by teachers, coaches, and other staff members each year.

Nancy Alberts gave the Principals report (attached at the end of the minutes).
Laura Moccia reported that the current balance of the account is $7164. We brought in $6,364.68 with expenses to date of $4109.57. This gave us a profit of $2255.11. Of the profit Parent Club retained $695.11 and have paid $1560 to clubs/sports which includes:
- $800 to the volleyball team for working a concession stand last year.
- $260 to the soccer team
- $500 to campus ministry
We have also paid:
- $800 for a drum set from Manning Music that was ordered last year and came in August.
- $130 for equipment for PE classes that included badminton rackets and jump ropes.
- $39 for a sign for the concession stand.
- Paid for donuts for the staff and students to have after the all-school Mass.
Laura also reported that she reserved the downstairs room at the Heritage Conference Center for prom and we will have to pay them $400 before the first of the year.
Beth Hoffman read the minutes from the September 3, 2008 Parents Club meeting and they were approved.
Trash bag sales
Janice did a rough count of the trash bags orders that were turned in and we sold approximately 1400 rolls which should net approximately $3100. Trash bags will be ordered Thursday and delivered to Midwest on Tuesday October 14.
Homecoming
A few notes from Homecoming:
- Campus Ministry had a concession stand at the powder-puff game on Wednesday night so Parents Club did not open.
- PC gave out 13 cases of pop and 175 bags of popcorn at the Pep Rally.
- Thanks to all of the parents that decorated the fields for the football game on Friday and the soccer game on Saturday.
Concession stands
Laura proposed assigning all of the parents who volunteered at registration to help with concession stands shifts to work the basketball games. With their assigned shift they will also receive the list of volunteers with phone numbers in order to call for replacements if they are not able to work. Laura will have the lists ready before the next Parents Club meeting on November 5th. If clubs and sports request games for fundraisers the parents assigned to that game will be notified.
New President-Elect
Janice introduced Shelly Domann, our new President-Elect. Shelly lives at Mooney Creek and has a son, Andrew, who is a freshman.
Father/Daughter, Mother/Son Dance-Parents Weekend
The Wanos have been scheduled for the dances and will cost $450 for each dance. The dances will cost $25 before a certain date to be determined and then $30 after that date. Janice has contacted Danny Wagner to print the invitations. One of the dances will be at ACES in the old gym (and we will not be charged) and the other will be at MH-MA in the new gym-which dance goes at which location will be decided at a later date. Rox Stec is taking photos at Father/Daughter and Kelly Elias is taking photos at Mother/Son.
Promotional products
Parents Club will be ordering long-sleeved t-shirts. They are navy blue and embroidered. They will be sold by themselves or bundled with one of the sweatshirts with a discount off of both items.
Sports buttons
There was a mix-up on the sports buttons for Fall Sports with a change in the cheerleading coach. Photos were taken by Kelly Elias and the buttons are cut. Parents Club will make what we can and give to the parents of the players at no charge. Parents Club will take over making the buttons and we will charge Parents for the Winter Sports buttons when they receive them.
The next Parents Club Meeting is Wednesday, November 5, 2008.

Principal’s Report
- Academics
- Added two college courses this year—college psychology taught by Mrs. Fowler and college speech taught by Ms. Supple.
- Also added a basic psychology course taught by Mr. Patino.
- New teachers are: Mark Henderson, English; Stephanie Morris, music; Jim Coop, history; Courtney Edmonds, art and publications; and Michael French, chemistry and physics.
- Science wing is now completed. (Project included a new boiler; our old one kept going out last winter.)
- MAP Testing October 20 – October 31. This is our local assessment that we used for accreditation documentation. All students take the MAP in reading, English, and math.
- Homecoming festivities
- Thanks to those parents who helped decorate the fields for homecoming—both football and soccer fields were decorated.
- Dance for students was well-attended and everyone had fun.
- Board Committees
- Alumni Association has formed and continues to grow. There was an alumni scholarship that was given to a day student for this school year.
- The Maur Hill – Mount Academy Endowment is moving forward, but not yet completed.
- Facilities committee is meeting on Saturday to tour all buildings and hope to have a plan for facility updates in place by the end of the year.
- Admissions
- Deke is currently on an Asian recruitment trip.
- 12 countries are represented in our dorms and school—Africa, Belize, China, India, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, Taiwan, Pakistan, Vietnam, and United States.
- Official count on September 22 was 190—108 day students and 82 boarding students. This is up from last year by about 10 students at the beginning of the year.
- Financial Status
- We are financially stable and plan to operate within a balanced budget this school year.
- To fund the science wing we have borrowed $235,000 from the Archdiocese and funded the remaining $235,000 through gifts and pledges. The total gifts and pledges for the project came to over $500,000. As the pledges are paid, the loan to the Archdiocese will be repaid.
- The bathrooms were completed downstairs as a capital improvement and have been appreciated by faculty and students.
